Real Madrid have not flinched. In a favorable waiver after his home victory in the first leg (3-1), Casa Blanca validated his ticket for the semi-finals of the Champions League thanks to a draw on the lawn of Liverpool this Wednesday (0-0 ).
Back to the wall after the result of the first leg, Liverpool made a good start to the match by imposing intense pressure on their opponent. And Real could thank his goalkeeper Courtois, decisive twice, after ten minutes of play. The Madrid goalkeeper won first against Salah, ideally served by Mané at the penalty spot, in the 2nd minute, then s’ flew a few moments later to repel a shot from Milner which took the direction of the net.
After these two big fears, the debates rebalanced a little and the Merengue got a huge opportunity with a shot from Benzema on the post of Alisson. The only real Madrid opportunity during the first 45 minutes. After a more complicated quarter of an hour in the game, Liverpool were again dangerous as the break approached but wasted two new opportunities with shots over Salah and Wijnaldum. So many wasted opportunities during the first act for Jürgen Klopp’s team…
The second half started again like the first, with a shot from Firmino stopped by Courtois after less than a minute of play. But Liverpool were no longer as dangerous as in the first half. What pushed Klopp to make strong choices on the hour mark with the entries of Thiago and Jota to replace Milner and Kabak. Without that changing much in this meeting.
In a more offensive configuration, the Reds had all the trouble in the world to worry Courtois in his goal. On the other side of the field, it even took a good stop from Alisson in front of Vinicius to keep the hopes of the Anfield residents. But the minutes passed and resignation could be read on the faces of the Liverpool players, who no longer had the legs to create the feat before the final whistle. The Mersey club had missed its chance in the first period and never really recovered.
Dortmund 1-2 Man City (City qualified)
Already winner in the first leg (2-1), Manchester City won on Borussia Dortmund (1-2) in the quarter-final second leg of the Champions League. The Citizens will face Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals.
Blame it on sterile possession, Manchester City was yet dominated at the start of the match. Borussia Dortmund operated mainly against with much more edge in their initiatives, like Dahoud’s powerful strike on Ederson. The magnificent opening of the score of the young Bellingham (1-0, 15th) was therefore deserved for the Germans, not at all worried in the first 20 minutes! But Terzic’s men were starting to pay for their efforts and Man City benefited from less intense pressure from the opposing side.
The opportunity for De Bruyne to take advantage of a loss of ball and send his attempt on the bar! Then goalkeeper Hitz, who prevented the goal against his camp from Morey, was saved on his line by Bellingham! It was seriously heating up on Borussia’s goal. And that was nothing compared to the waves suffered when returning from the locker room. The Citizens were clearly picking up the pace and pushing Emre Can to fault when the midfielder awkwardly caused a penalty. An offering which took advantage of Mahrez (1-1, 55th) to equalize and put his team in front in the confrontation.
The Bundesliga resident was then obliged to react. But without energy on the German side, only Hummels’ head just above worried Ederson. While opposite, Man City, carried by an excellent De Bruyne, had more and more control. A domination concretized by Foden (1-2, 75th) after a small error of hand of the porter Hitz, however impeccable on the festival of De Bruyne just before. The Citizens thus ended the suspense and their curse under Guardiola. They will find PSG in the semi-finals for a remake of the 2016 quarter-final, fatal to Laurent Blanc.
