The news will be a blow to the next 11 ‘founding members’ – including English clubs Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham.

Chelsea are set to become the first club to withdraw from the planned European Super League.

The Premier League giants were one of twelve major European clubs to pledge to play an important role in yet another breakaway competition they believed would equal the Champions League on Sunday.

But the move has been condemned at virtually every level, with fan groups, football figures and lawmakers all voicing their resistance to the proposal.

Thousands of fans have challenged the new venture outside Stamford Bridge ahead of the Premier League clash with Brighton.

In addition, shortly before kick-off, news came under scrutiny that the club are preparing documents to withdraw from the competition.

The news will be a blow to the next 11 ‘founding members’ – including English clubs Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham – who broke ranks on Sunday night by reporting plans for what they intend to be another 20 team Competition.
