Friends, family, past and current Apple TV users, we have gathered here today to mourn the loss of the best remote for streaming.

Earlier this week, Apple unveiled its new Apple TV 4K, the new generation decoder that will replace the old Apple product of the same name. While this new box will see some interesting improvements over its predecessor – more power with the A12 Bionic chip, as well as nifty calibration features to adjust the picture on your TV using an iPhone – I was devastated by the reveal of a new touchpad. minus the Siri remote.

Indeed, Apple’s latest remote will likely fix some of the more controversial devices from the previous Apple TV remote. For one thing, it has a larger form factor and a thicker, all-aluminum body, which should make it a bit easier to find between the cushions. It also adds a number of buttons and moves the Siri button prompt to the right side of the remote, much like on the iPhone. Everything is going well.

But I’m personally bowled over by Apple’s choice to swap out the touchpad – the best and the most misunderstood Apple TV black remote attachment – for a touchpad that supports a circular gesture for browsing content. It’s still tactile, but I can’t imagine it producing the same experience as having the entire top of the remote dedicated to touch, something I loved about the previous Apple TV remote over any other. Ready-to-use streaming wand. .

The touchpad has made the experience for me, personally. It was perfect for skipping content, which I do a lot. Other streaming remotes, like the one for the Chromecast with Google TV (which I love), often seem cheap and poorly designed in comparison. In the past, I’ve been able to influence some of the harshest critics of the Apple TV remote (my own colleagues), reminding them that touchpad speed could be adjusted for better control.

I am, of course, excited to check out the new Apple TV 4K – aluminum remote control and all. But I know that every time I reach it, I won’t think of the remote in my hand but of the one that came before it. It provided the perfect streaming experience. Dare I say it was one of my big gadget likes.

Pour one for the Apple TV remote of my dreams. May he rest peacefully and find the appreciation he so deserved in the hereafter of the great gadget.
