Central Coast Mariners 0-4 Brisbane Roar: Visitors gain a slice of routed A-League history

Brisbane Roar beat the out of form Central Coast Mariners 4-0 in Wednesday’s League A clash to move within striking distance of the top six and win a slice of history.

Macaulay’s goals Gillesphey and Joseph Champness had Roar two goals clear, and a straight red card for Marco Urena just past the hour preceded more of the Mariners’ misfortune with subs Alex Parsons and Masato Kudo on target late at Central Coast Stadium.

A third straight win puts Roar in seventh, just one point behind Western United in sixth, while the Mariners are still third but have only one win in their last eight years.

The win also means Roar is undefeated in 19 games against the Mariners (W15, D4), scoring any team’s longest unbeaten streak against a single opponent in A-League history.

The breakthrough came after 19 minutes when Gillesphey flew home to the back post after Jay O’Shea’s right wing cross was deflected on his path.

Champness brilliantly pulled off a 25-yard effort for his first A-League goal in two years, shortly before Urena went red after a VAR check for a bad tackle on O’Shea.

Parsons folded at home his first A-League goal in the 89th minute and the scoring was completed with a finish at the post by Kudo in added time.
