Recently promoted Chengdu Better City has confirmed the signing of veteran midfielder Feng Zhuoyi from Henan Jianye.
The start of the 2020 soccer season in China is still unknown, but that hasn’t stopped the country’s teams from making new additions.
As is the case with Chengdu Better City, which has added a player with a lot of experience in the Chinese Super League in recent seasons.
30-year-old defensive midfielder Feng Zhuoyi has played for Henan Jianye since the 2016 season, totaling 103 league appearances (106 in all competitions) during that span.
The move to Chengdu Better City is surprising, with Feng having been a regular starter for the Chinese Red Devils, scoring three goals and providing additional assist during the 2019 season.
Feng’s familiarity with Chengdu city dates back to the early days of his career, where he worked his way through the Chengdu Blades youth system, becoming a regular feature in the early 2010s before a transfer to Guangzhou R&F.
After struggling to make an impact on South China’s first team, Feng moved to Henan and established himself as a regular Chinese Super League player.
Now he has returned to the city where his career began and at 30 he still has plenty of football left.
He will be a valuable addition to last season’s China League Two South finalists, offering a lot of experience and quality in the midfield to help the team claim to stay in the second tier.
It may be a few more months before Chengdu Better City can see Feng Zhuoyi play a competitive game for the club, but his signing shows the team are headed in the right direction.
When the 2020 China League One season kicks off, Chengdu could be a pleasant surprise and will not be a team to be overlooked, despite coming out of tier three for the first time in their history.
