A training moment recorded, Paul George just 1 for 10 in three quarters, Donovan Mitchell runs off, when Vivint’s crowd cheered the loudest, and other topics discussed on social media during Game 1.
The Utah Jazz had a great second half en route to a Game 1 victory over the LA Clippers in the second round of the NBA playoffs on Tuesday, and there was intrigue throughout the game.
From a massive Rudy Gobert block to Donovan Mitchell’s continued outburst to a struggling Paul George to a DeMarcus Cousins sighting and pretty much everything in between, social media had a lot to say about it all.
Here’s what people discussed in Utah’s 112-109 win over the Clippers.
Rudy Gobert ends the game with a block
Nothing suited the alleged Defensive Player of the Year other than giving Marcus Morris Sr. the time elapsed on a potential 3-point equalizer.
Quin Snyder gives a pep talk to Donovan Mitchell
On TNT aired during a segment that listens to coaches and players who have microphones on during the game, a moment between jazz coach Quin Snyder and Donovan Mitchell was captured.
Snyder was giving Mitchell a pep talk, a speech fans praised the coach for after hearing him.
Weird playoff P
Paul George is considered one of the best players on the Clippers roster. He and Kawhi Leonard are said to be good enough, in tandem, to take LA deep into the playoffs.
But a constant affair with George is his lack of production when it matters most. This continued against the Jazz, where he scored just seven points on a 1-on-10 shot in the three quarters.
Fans on social media haven’t let it go.
Donovan Mitchell’s race
Mitchell left to start the second quarter and scored 10 straight points to put the Jazz down to just five points. Included in this run was a dirty 3 stepback and rim workout for a dunk.
The lively crowd comes to life
Jazz dragged on for most of the first half. But there was a streak that rocked the crowd in the arena like no other time.
Bojan Bogdanovic stole the ball and ran to the right corner to shoot and score a 3-pointer that reduced Utah’s deficit to nine. The sold-out crowd erupted into cheers and made the atmosphere deafening. Those inside the arena and watching from home commented on the noise.
DeMarcus Cousins confronts Rudy Gobert
The great Clippers reserve man has been hampered by injuries in recent years, but had a streak early in the second quarter that looked like the Boogie of his days at the Sacramento Kings.
The cousins tied Rudy Gobert up and took the ball away from him to one side, then scored and completed a 3-point game seconds later. Gobert later pulled a pair of fouls on Cousins, who was attempting to draw charges.
The fans loved every moment.
Ivica Zubac neighborhood party
The Clippers center provided good minutes in the first quarter, picking up three points and four rebounds in seven minutes. But it was his home defense that got fans talking on social media when he blocked back-to-back shots from Jordan Clarkson.
The first shooting fights
The Jazz are a relatively efficient shooting team, and when taking shots they are virtually impossible to beat.
To start the game, however, that was not the case for Utah. At one point, the Jazz were only 3 for 21 on the court, and I felt like the fans in the arena were starting to get worried.
Fans on social media felt the same.
Absence of Mike Conley = loss of Jazz?
It was already at least slightly unlikely that the Jazz playmaker would play Game 1 against the Clippers after twisting his right thigh in the final game against the Memphis Grizzlies. But the team made that official before Tuesday’s game.
It is clear that the Jazz need Conley to go far in the playoffs. But fans on social media were already counting the Jazz against the Clippers with him.
There is still some good news on this front. Conley was seen lifting a few punches before the game. Game 2 is Thursday.
